The normal vaginal flora refers to the community of microorganisms that naturally live in the vagina and help keep it healthy. The dominant organisms are Lactobacillus species, especially Lactobacillus crispatus, L. jensenii, and L. iners. These bacteria play a protective role by producing lactic acid, which maintains an acidic vaginal pH of 3.5–4.5. The acidic environment prevents the overgrowth of harmful pathogens such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida albicans, and sexually transmitted organisms.

Lactobacilli also produce hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and bacteriocins, which inhibit the growth of bacteria that may cause infections. A healthy vaginal flora depends on adequate estrogen levels, which stimulate the vaginal epithelium to produce glycogen. Lactobacilli feed on this glycogen and convert it into lactic acid. This is why pre-pubertal girls, post-menopausal women, and individuals on antibiotics may have reduced lactobacilli and are more prone to infections.

Other normal organisms found in smaller quantities include Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and anaerobic species like Peptostreptococcus. When the balance of normal flora is disturbed, conditions like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or urinary tract infections may occur.

Overall, a healthy vaginal flora is essential for maintaining natural defense, comfort, and reproductive health.
